All three OPPO players (DV-983H, DV-981HD and DV-980H) are excellent DVD players with high definition up-conversion. All three models support DVD-Video, DVD-Audio and SACD. The DV-980H offers a nice balance of overall performance and value. With its optimized high-fidelity audio circuitry, the DV-980H can also satisfy the discriminating needs of an audio enthusiast. The DV-981HD emphasizes on the video performance and is designed for home theater with large screens. The DV-983H is the new flagship model designed for serious home theater enthusiasts. It features the latest video processing technology and utilizes more high-end audio circuitry components than the other two models.
The main differences are:
Video Processing Technology:
- The DV-983H features "VRS by Anchor Bay" video processing technologies. An ABT102 chipset provides AutoCUE-C™, Progressive Cadence Detection™, and Precision De-interlacing™. An ABT1018 chip handles Precision Video Scaling™, frame rate conversion, aspect ratio control and video zooming.
- The DV-981HD features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja.
- The DV-980H uses a customized Mediatek "System-on-Chip" for video de-interlacing and up-conversion.
- While all three players produce excellent picture quality and the difference is subtle, the "VRS by Anchor Bay" technologies cover more areas of video processing and enhancement, and can handle more tricky video contents. "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is also capable of handling some tricky video contents. The "System-on-Chip" solution featured in DV-980H delivers excellent picture for properly mastered video contents.
- On very large TV or projector screens, the difference could be noticed by experts or videophiles. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the DV-983H will usually score the highest, followed by DV-981HD and DV-980H.
Display Device Compatibility:
- The DV-983H can be used with any display technology - Plasma, LCD, DLP, LCoS, or CRT; flat panel, front projection, rear projection, or direct-view tube. Its "stretch" aspect ratio control mode is especially useful for high-end projectors with an anamorphic lens.
- The DV-981HD shows its advantage with large screen displays. On a smaller screen, the performance advantage is offset by the screen size and becomes less important. If your projector or flat panel TV has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and can accept the 1080p/60 signal, and you are looking for excellent film-like picture quality, the DV-981HD is highly recommended. When used with some rear projection TVs, especially those with DLP technology, the DV-981H may make encoding defects in video very noticeable. This problem is often called "Macroblocking". It can be avoided by carefully calibrating the display, but calibration is often time-consuming. To avoid the problem, the DV-983H or DV-980H should be used with such rear projection TVs.
- The DV-980H supports all display technologies. It is recommended for display device with smaller screen size for the best performance/cost ratio. It is also highly recommended for users with rear projection TVs, especially those with DLP technology because the DV-980H does not exhibit the "Macroblocking" issue.
HDMI Output Resolution:
- All three models support the following output resolutions: NTSC: 1080p/1080i/720p/480p, PAL: 1080p/1080i/720p/576p.
- The DV-980H in addition supports 480i/576i native SD resolution over HDMI. If you use an external video signal processor with HDMI input the DV-980H is highly recommended.
Component Output:
- The DV-983H offers component output. However the component output does not feature "VRS by Anchor Bay" video processing. Video performance over component is similar to that of the DV-980H.
- The DV-981HD does not have component output.
- The DV-980H offers component output and is recommended you plan to use component video as the primary video connection.
Handling of PAL Contents:
- The DV-983H handles PAL contents very well. It can automatically detect and support 2:2 cadence. The user can force 2:2 de-interlacing mode for content that is tricky to detect. Its precision video scaling and frame rate conversion features enable displaying PAL video on NTSC TV without any tearing and loss of resolution.
- The DV-981HD also handles PAL contents very well. It can automatically detect and support 2:2 cadence. PAL-to-NTSC conversion is performed without any tearing and loss of resolution.
- The DV-980H can play PAL contents. Its 2:2 cadence support is not as advanced as the other two models. The DV-980H can also perform PAL-to-NTSC conversion, however the conversion will cause a slight loss of picture resolution.
SACD Playback:
- All three models support Super Audio CD (SACD) in addition to DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CD, etc.
- The DV-980H is capable of DSD output over HDMI. Utilizing this feature requires an audio/video receiver with HDMI 1.2a or above input and DSD decoding capability.
Analog Audio Output:
- The DV-983H and DV-980H offer 7.1CH analog audio output.
- The DV-981HD offers 5.1CH analog audio output.
Convenience Features:
- The DV-983H has a USB 2.0 port on its back panel.
- The DV-981HD does not support USB.
- The DV-980H has a USB 2.0 port on its front panel.
